Biography US inventor of the domestic electric washing machine. A Chicago engineer, in 1910 he patented a washing machine powered by a small electric motor and fitted with a self-reversing gearbox to ensure the clothes were not compacted into a solid mass. It was marketed as the ‘Thor’ by the Hurley Machine Co of Chicago, and was the forerunner of the modern washing machine. |
